La normatividad es un fenómeno ubicuo, aunque intrigante. Además de los claros casos de la moralidad y el derecho, se dice —o se ha dicho— que alguna suerte de normatividad está presente en el lenguaje (o alguna dimensión de él), en los estados mentales intencionales, en la lógica, en la epistemología, en las relaciones sociales y, en general, en toda actividad reglada. En efecto, más allá de algunos enfoques escépticos (vgr. el emotivismo), parece indisputable que la moralidad es un fenómeno intrínsecamente normativo, ya sea porque involucra valores morales, ya sea porque implica un conjunto de normas acerca de lo que se debe o no se debe hacer.
